Ash is my child, and what they have been through is every mother’s worst nightmare. We’ve had an incredibly tough few years, and I don’t know how we would have coped without Freeva’s support.
Ash was sexually abused and raped by a coworker in a restaurant when they were 17. Ash has been diagnosed with multiple mental health disorders, so they are very vulnerable, and the abuse absolutely devastated them. It severely affected their self-esteem, worsened their anxiety, and caused them to begin suffering with panic attacks.
I tried my best to support Ash however I could, but unfortunately there was only so much I could do; I knew that we needed help, both with Ash’s mental health and with legal proceedings after we reported the abuse. I started researching organisations to help us but felt unsure to begin with, because Ash is non-binary I was concerned that we may not find someone that understands their experiences, or that they may not respect Ash’s identity. However, when we reached out to Freeva they put my mind at ease straight away. They conducted a thorough initial assessment to best understand Ash’s unique needs, and assigned us with a case worker who had in-depth understanding, and experience working with LGBTQ+ individuals.
Straight away, Freeva provided Ash with plenty of resources to help them deal with their anxiety, insomnia, and panic attacks outside of their support sessions. Following on from this, Freeva supported us through the whole trial process, liaising with the relevant authorities, arranging and attending meetings, and providing ongoing emotional support for Ash throughout. Unfortunately, the trial did not end in the result that we were all hoping for, which was a huge blow for Ash and severely impacted their mental health. Throughout this dark time, Freeva stood beside us, doing everything they could to support Ash. Ash has now been referred by Freeva to the mental health service so that they can continue receiving ongoing support.
I will forever be grateful for how Freeva have supported Ash through such a difficult time. They have been so compassionate, always prioritised Ash’s safety, and worked well with all the other agencies involved. I truly don’t know how we could have gotten through this process without Freeva, and I’m so thankful to them for everything they did for my child.
I feel such pride as I see Ash navigating their journey to recovery and receiving the help they need.

Breaking the silence of Domestic Abuse
Domestic abuse is a deeply isolating experience. Those who endure it often carry the weight of their trauma in silence, hidden behind smiles and quiet demeanour. This silence is not a choice but a survival mechanism, a way to navigate a world that may not understand the depths of their suffering.
